Know Your Rights
We’re in a tense moment right now. A lot of people in our community are scared—of raids, of deportations, of being separated from their families. If that’s you or someone you love, I want you to know: you still have rights. And knowing those rights is one of the best ways to protect yourself.
Here are some basics everyone should know:
If ICE Shows Up at Your Door
Don’t open the door. ICE can’t enter your home without a signed warrant from a judge. Ask them to slide it under the door.
Stay calm and silent. You do not have to answer questions or share your immigration status.
Don’t sign anything without talking to a lawyer. You could be signing away your right to stay in the U.S.
If You’re Stopped in Public or at Work
You have the right to remain silent—even if you’re not a citizen.
You do not have to show ID or papers unless ICE has a warrant.
Ask: “Am I free to go?” If they say yes, walk away calmly.
If You’re Detained
You have the right to speak with an attorney.
You can refuse to sign any documents until a lawyer is present.
Tell your family or someone you trust where you are and ask them to contact a legal aid organization immediately.
